12:30 pm: Flag Amendment
Flag amendment? Flag amendment?! Does this come up EVERY election cycle, or what?! I'm serious, I think this has come up every two years for, like, the LAST FRIGGING DECADE!!!

Actually, I just checked the good old Intar-web, and it says the House has passed the amendment EVERY year for the past six years. It's only been defeated in the Senate. This year, it was defeated by only one vote.

James Madison, one of the people who designed our Constitution, said that it should be amended only on "great and extraordinary occasions." Yeah, and SUGGESTIONS for amending it should be made EVERY FRIGGING YEAR. Especially the same suggestion, over and over again. Right in between Flag Day and the Fourth of July.

Ech. Our tax dollars at work.

Baby sleeping. Must take advantage of writing time. Must remember: Blogging does not affect word count.

Flag burning

(Link)
The Republican party brings up gay marriage and flag burning amendments to the constitution like an octopus squiring out a cloud of ink. They always do it when they are in trouble--the war looks like shit, half the party leadership is indicted on this or that, the price of gas is high. The octopus is threatened. It doesn't know where to go...

Then suddenly we find ourselves debating flag-burning again. It's just amazing. No other modern nation would have this debate about protecting a inanimate objects. I see the solemn, pseudo-religious atmosphere around patriotic American symbols as a complex process of projection in which feelings of guilt over America's hyperconsumption and international aggression are covered up by a veneer of blinding morality, self-righteousness, and the idea of being god's chosen people.

It's enough to make me smile at the Enlightenment...

Oh, man, you put that so much better than I did. That's awesome.

But use squid - octopi are so much smarter than squid. ;-)

Yeah you're right. I actually love the octopi. We've got one at the Brooklyn Aquarium that's very beautiful. So, squid then.
